In the heart of the Madonie, the welcoming people of Castelbuono open their doors to us, eager to share the beauty of a region still little-known outside Sicily.
As we wander from encounter to encounter, we meet warm-hearted, passionate locals. We discover breathtaking natural sites and lose ourselves in the charming alleyways of timeless villages. The journey also takes us through the rich flavours of the local cuisine – a world apart from the Italian food we think we know. A unique experience that reveals one of Sicily’s most authentic faces.
Day 1: Palermo
Arrival in Palermo – Journey to Castelbuono
On arrival in Palermo, we travel to Castelbuono where we meet our local guide before enjoying some free time. In the evening, a home-cooked dinner with local hosts offers a first taste of Sicilian hospitality. Overnight stay in Castelbuono (in small family-run apartments).
Day 2: In Search of the Essence of Sicily – through the Streets (and Pastry Shops) of Castelbuono
We start the day like true Sicilians, with a cappuccino or espresso in one of the cafés of Castelbuono’s historic centre. We then set out to explore the town’s charming old quarters. Along the way, we sample local specialities, meet passionate artisans, and visit the medieval castle…
Day 3: Discovering the Natural Treasures of the Madonie Park
In the morning, we set off on a hike along the Trail of Monumental Trees. Here, we experience the extraordinary natural wealth of the Madonie, one of the Mediterranean’s richest areas of biodiversity. After a picnic lunch, we continue with a visit to Castelbuono’s Natural History Museum…
Day 4: Cefalù
We set out for Cefalù, renowned for its stunning Arab-Norman cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At lunchtime, we sample arancini and panelle – two icons of Sicilian street food – in a café in the heart of the old town. The afternoon is free to enjoy at your own pace…
Day 5: Immersion in the Sicilian Countryside
Mario welcomes us onto his land at the foot of the Madonie mountains, where traditions remain very much a way of life. Discover age-old farming practices, edible wild plants and local medicinal herbs. Mario also introduces us to the secrets of manna, a rare natural sweet. Depending on the season, activities may include harvesting, preparing traditional balm, or learning the art of tree grafting…
Day 6: Exploring the Caves (Meals: BL– ; Transport: 20 min)
Today we explore two small, easily accessible caves. Along the trail, we enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the lower Madonie, Castelbuono and the Tyrrhenian coast. We pause for a picnic lunch in a small mountain shelter…
Day 7: The Madonie Tour (Meals BL– ; Transport: 3h)
We set off early for Isnello, a picturesque village nestled at the foot of the Monte Grotta Grande cliffs. From there, we continue into the high mountains. Along the way, we cross remarkable geological sites that tell the story of the Madonie and harbour extraordinary biodiversity. We pause at places steeped in the captivating tales of shepherds and brigands…
Day 8: Palermo (Meals B–– ; Transport: 2h15)
Departure for Palermo. Depending on flight times, there may be an opportunity to visit the archaeological site of Himera, once a thriving Greek city, or to enjoy a final stroll through Palermo.
